two heads are better than one

One of the cool things happening in these topsy turvy economic times (no really, there is some good in all this) is that small businesses are becoming more creative and they’re recognizing the value of collaboration to make good products even better and help spread the word about their goodies. Case in point is the teaming up of two local companies – Milk Factory and Shirtseed.

Both are mum-run businesses inspired by their kids. Penny Seto is the brains behind Milk Factory, known for their quick-drying infant and toddler clothes made from performance fabric with natural sun-protection. Shirtseed’s tees are an organic bamboo cotton blend embellished with funky, fun graphics that are silk screened by hand by designer Amy Rogerson using chemical-free ink.

So when Seto, who was looking for something new and exciting to do with her active wear, and Rogerson, who was on the hunt for a local supply of ethically produced colourful tees for her popular bike designs, were brainstorming business strategies, a great idea was born. Why not embellish Seto’s tees with Rogerson’s funky designs and open up new markets to both entrepreneurs?

The process took a bit of trial and error as Rogerson’s water-based inks didn’t stick well to the fabric used in Milk Factory’s tees. The solution was found at a local printer who uses inks that exceed the CPSIA standards for safe lead and phthlate levels. The result is a limited edition run of easy-to-wear and easy-to-care-for long- and short-sleeved brown tees with either a cool Vintage Chopper bike in smoke blue or a Vintage Trike in pink. And the timing’s perfect, coinciding with spring’s arrival  and kids jumping back on their bikes.  Just add a helmet and go.

Find them at Milk Factory: www.milkfactory.com and Shirtseed: www.shirtseed.com. Inspired? You can find more of the back story on both of their blogs as well.
