A few weeks ago, we met a friend of the boys at West Point Grey Park. And what a fabulous park it is. We're really lucky here on the west coast. The list of parks in the City of Vancouver seems endless and the handy Park Finder is brilliant.
I'm assuming that other parents get the same response when arriving at a new park...or maybe, as with our boys, any park.
First. The inaugural 'run-as-fast-as-you-can-and-check-everything-out'. It's like a pack of puppies marking their territory. They each ran like gangbusters from the tire swing to the slide to the regular swings to the climbing rock to the empty wadding pool.
Mid-marking, they ran into another friend from daycare that just happened to be there with another friend. Well, if that didn't take the excitement level up 10 notches! At this point I wished that someone would walk up to me, stamp my forehead with 'terrified playground mom' and hand me a blind fold and ear plugs. I simply can't handle the stress of watching my children run...waiting for them to fall. And there is no doubt. They will fall.
This day, however, was a surprise. No major wounds. No crocodile tears. Just a whole lot of fun had by all. The four parents even got to have short, uninterrupted (I said short) adult conversations.
This park is particularily great in my book. There is a huge field for flying a kite. Although, sadly, after much effort, it was decided that there wasn't quite enough of a breeze, and a winded Dad gave up.
The climbing equipment is quite varied and there are two separate sections so that even on a busy Sunday morning, there was room for everyone of all ages. Thankfully, ditto for the swings -- because there are some parents that simply have no playground etiquette and think it's 'cute' when their daughter intentionally crashes into others. Hello! Do you not see the stamp on my forehead?!
The big hits were the empty wadding pool -- because there is no better way to terrify your mother than by jumping into an empty concrete wadding pool and go running back and forth, as fast as you possibly can, with three other boys. And, the climbing rock (pictured right). Oli's friend has no fear. At all. Whereas Oli wouldn't climb back down on his own, nevermind stand up on top. Theo...it may look like he's an uber-climber but really, his left foot never left the ground.
A must for any park -- a water fountain -- I'm sure they guzzled a gallon each. And for the record, we didn't make them wear the matching orange Milk Factory shirts. They picked them themselves.
FREE fun!
