It was so beautiful this weekend! We spent a bunch of time out in the garden and even fired up the barbeque for some tasty burgers and a baked salmon. Yum!
Sunday was particularly fun. We spent ALL day at home. It's the one thing the boys always ask for on Friday..."Is it the weekend now? Can we stay home?" It's not that we're social butterflies or anything, they just LOVE to be at home.
We had a short but fun early morning visit from my brother and niece who live on Vancouver Island. The three cousins played soccer, basketball, hockey, golf, hoola-hooped and rode bikes. All in a 2 hour visit. I've learned to just relax and let them bounce from activity to activity...there simply is no use trying to keep up! Saving grace - they know to clean up along the way.

After lunch on Sunday, we headed back outside to give some attention to my poor garden. There are all kinds of things growing over the dead of last season. Content to weed on my own, I dug right in - hee hee - get it?! In the background I could hear Coach Oli telling Theo where to put the soccer net. Not surprisingly, two minutes later Theodore was at my side asking to help. He loves to do what I do, whereas his brother is all about the sport and is happy to play any one of them on his own. My happy little helper always has a bazillion questions. Many of which I have to come up with creative answers for...no green thumb here!
As we chatted, Oli joined in. There was much talk about the difference between "Mommy's flowers" and "weeds" and why you don't step on the former but pull out the latter. We looked for bugs and worms and found all kinds of critters...ants, spiders, ladybugs, rollie-pollies, snails, and a dead bee. We talked about what not to eat - which is ANYTHING - without parent's permission. They offered to carry the weeds to the bin. Once. Then they were "bored" and went back to the soccer game.
I love that the boys were interested in the non-sport of gardening. There was no pressure to help or to learn and that seemed to make it all the more natural. When I found something, I'd call them over and we'd chat. When they found something, I'd go to them and we'd chat. I also love that it didn't cost me anything but paid me in quality outdoor play with my boys. As a bonus, I have a beautiful bouquet of bright yellow dandelions in my kitchen...and a terrible bout of allergies. But it was so worth it!
